UPDATE: 3 hurt in Highway 24 wreck identified

A two-car wreck along Highway 24 sent a family of three from Florida to the hospital Sunday.

The crash happened just between 12 p.m. Sunday on US-24 near Palomino Road.

Officials said Alexis Vargas, 22, was driving a Hyundai Elantra east on Highway 24 when the car hit an icy patch of road and slid into an oncoming SUV.

The passenger, Samantha Vargas, 21, and a one-year-old child were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries according to the State Patrol.

The Vargas family is from Orlando, Fla.

Billy Masse, 59, of Canon City was inside the SUV. He suffered minor injuries.

US-24 was closed while officials worked on the accident, but has since reopened.

Investigators said Vargas may have been going too fast but have yet to ticket him for speeding.
