Black Forest roads snowy, visibility limited by blowing snow

Blowing snow made driving difficult in Black Forest Sunday.

Roads were icy despite El Paso County road crews in the area.

Drivers said the roads were much worse on the north end of El Paso County compared to the Colorado Springs area.

“It’s not as bad down there as it is up here,” said Ron Hess.

Hess took his family into Colorado Springs for a hockey game that his son played in. He said he had no regrets about braving the roads for the game.

“On the way down to Colorado Springs we saw an accident on northbound I-25,” said Hess. “There was a trailer that was torn up. It was a five vehicle accident.”

Though several accidents were reported Sunday across the front range none were serious. Many were cars hitting poles.

Hess said it wasn’t just the ice that was a problem.

“The wind is blowing. That’s the other thing to take into consideration when you’re driving,” said Hess.

Gusty winds limited visibility on Hodgen Road, Black Forest Road and several others in the area.

Those lucky enough to avoid an open stretch of road with no wind-blown snow across the road found the driving bearable.

“This isn’t so bad, I’ve seen the roads a lot worse than this,” said Nick Hilborn. “It’s mostly packed snow instead of being frozen on slush.”

Still, Hilborn said he wouldn’t have left the house for pizza if he didn’t have a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Stormtracker 13 Chief Meteorologist Matt Meister said you can expect more of the same Monday. Temperatures won’t warm up enough to melt any of that ice but the wind should be more calm than it was Sunday.
