Police suspect Pueblo man killed his wife

Three children lost both of their parents in a homicide in Pueblo. It happened Tuesday morning in the 1100 block of Mass Street in the Belmont neighborhood.

Police said 34-year-old Adeline Whitehead was stabbed to death. Her husband, 35-year-old Roy Whitehead, is the prime suspect. But just minutes after Adeline was stabbed, Roy crashed his motorcycle and died. Pueblo police are investigating it as a homicide and a domestic violence case.

According to the couple’s Facebook profiles, the two had been married for nearly six years. Police say the couple’s three children were home when their mom was killed.

“Even if the father never yelled at them or never hit them by watching the mother go through it, they experienced trauma at the very same level,” said Cindy Lau, shelter director of YWCA of Pueblo.

Unfortunately, Lau says domestic violence situations are becoming more common in Pueblo.

“We’re not only just seeing an increase. What we’re seeing is an increase in violence. The people that are coming in are telling us horrific stories,” Lau said.

Lau says she wants people to recognize the signs of domestic violence. She urges people to ask themselves questions like, is my partner extremely jealous and possessive? Or, does my partner put me down, call me names or criticize me?

Lau said, “You can get out of this. You can move on and have healthy relationships, but it’s not easy.”

If someone is the victim of domestic violence, they’re encouraged to call the national domestic hotline number at 800-799-7233.
