Accident on I-25 involving juveniles

An accident on I-25 at the Ilex exit shut down a portion of the highway for about three hours. There were four juveniles in the car and police say at least three were ejected.

It happened around 4:20 p.m. A 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse was traveling northbound in the 300 block of South I-25 near the Ilex interchange when the vehicle lost control. The two females and at least one of the males were ejected from the vehicle. Officers were unable to determine at the scene if the second male was also ejected. The two females sustained serious injuries while the males sustained minor injuries. All parties were transported to Parkview Hospital for treatment.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing, but speed is believed to be a factor. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected.

When the first accident occurred, the driver of a Ford truck traveling in the southbound lanes reacted to the accident by losing control and striking the barrier. The 60 year old male driver and only occupant of the truck was also transported to the hospital for treatment and released.

These two accidents shut down traffic in both north and south bound lanes until about 7:15 this evening.
