Illegal immigrants to rally for CO tuition

Colorado students who can’t receive in-state tuition because they’re illegal immigrants are headed to the state Capitol. The students are joining Democrats to push an expanded proposal to allow the students lower tuition while they seek citizenship.

The Democratic proposal being introduced Tuesday goes farther than previous Democratic attempts to lower tuition for illegal immigrants who were brought to this country as children. This year’s bill would make illegal immigrants eligible for in-state tuition. Last year, Democrats proposed a compromise tuition rate that was higher than in-state tuition but lower than out-of-state tuition.

Immigrant advocates say students will be joining the Democratic sponsors to promote this year’s tuition proposal. The measure stands a good chance of adoption this year because Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature.
