Ceremony for Sandy Hook victims held at Fort Carson

Teachers and families gathered at the Fort Carson Head Start Center Monday morning to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Monday marked one month since 20 children and six adults were killed by a gunman inside the elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Teachers at the Fort Carson Head Start Center said they are still in shock over what happened. In response, they organized a fundraising event and released balloons in honor of the families in Newtown.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 was honored to join the ceremony. Teachers and parents held a moment of silence before releasing the balloons. The balloons were green and white– Sandy Hook Elementary School’s official colors.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said Diana Birlean, a parent who attended the ceremony. “I remember the news saying we need to remember the victims, not the horrible monster. That right there is for the families.”

One of the organizers of the balloon launch said that, to her, each balloon symbolized a victim being released to heaven.
