Former Fort Carson soldier to receive Medal of Honor

Former Army Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha will receive the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in Afghanistan while serving with a Fort Carson-based unit.

Romesha will be the fourth living service member to receive the medal for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq.

“Staff Sgt. Romesha is a hero in our midst,” Senator Mark Udall said. “His courageous actions during one of the most vicious Taliban attacks of the Afghan war are a testament to the values and spirit of our soldiers.”

Romesha will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions on October 3, 2009, at Combat Outpost Keating, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan.

He was a Section Leader with Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

In addition to the Medal of Honor, Romesha has received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

President Barack Obama will present the Medal of Honor to Romesha in a ceremony on Feb. 11.

Romesha separated from the Army on April 4, 2011. He and his family currently live in Minot, North Dakota.
