Springs man introduces invention to ward off dog and coyote attacks

A Colorado Springs man introduces his invention that works to ward off dogs and coyotes from attacking.

Frank Avila has been training dogs professionally for more than 30 years.

He said he has been thinking about making his tool since the 1980s.

Avila worked with Synthesis Engineering and Spectrum Laser and Technologies to come up with a prototype.

He said he has patented the “K9 Stun Shield.” It works by using stun gun technology.

“This puts out 60 to 80,000 volts,” said Avila.

The tool is not meant to hurt an animal, but just to scare it.

Avila showed KRDO NewsChannel 13 videos of the tool used against a trained attack dog and pit bull.

Both animals were wary to get too close to the tool.

Avila said he hopes to manufacture the tool in Colorado Springs with local companies.
