Up to $10k for anglers who catch unwanted fish

Utah and Wyoming wildlife agencies have come up with a fun way to get rid of unwanted fish in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

On Feb. 1-3, they’ll host the third annual “Burbot Bash” fishing competition that gives anglers a chance to win up to $10,000 by catching burbots out of the reservoir.

Ryan Mosley of the Utah Division of Wildlife says that the burbot was illegally introduced into the reservoir in 2006. Since then, the population has exploded and done harm to other sport fish like the small mouth bass by eating them or their main source of food.

Fisherman can win $1,000, $2,500 or $10,000 by catching one of 25 burbots that will be tagged.

The Flaming Gorge Reservoir spans across the Wyoming-Utah border, south of Rock Springs, Wyo.
