Shooting investigation continues in Colorado Springs

A man who police say committed a carjacking and then crashed that car, is now under arrest.

Several witnesses told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that they heard as many as four gunshots around 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Chelton Road and Mallard Drive. Shortly after the gunfire, a vehicle crashed and two men ran from the scene, witnesses said.

Police said not long after that incident, there were two more: A carjacking a few blocks from the scene near the intersection of Chelton and Landmark Lane, and a vehicle that crashed after running a red light at the intersection of Hancock Expressway and Union Boulevard.

Sometime during those events, police said, a man showed up at Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police are investigating the entire sequence of events to determine if they’re connected.

Police said the man isn’t seriously injured, but so far hasn’t cooperated with them. Police also said they’re looking for at least one suspect. However, police have not released the men’s names.

A person involved in the crash at Hancock and Union was taken to a hospital as a precaution but wasn’t seriously hurt, police said.

Tyler Rivera said he was driving on Chelton when he nearly hit one of the men running from the scene.

“He looked like he was in shock and just wanted to get away from the incident,” Rivera said.

Rivera said when he saw the wrecked vehicle, he parked behind it to see if anyone needed help and saw a man standing there.

“I talked to him,” said Rivera. “He said he heard gunshots. He didn’t say whether he was in the car, but I think he was.”

Matthew Cleaver said he was babysitting four children when he heard the gunfire.

“This is like the fifth or sixth time it’s happened,” he said. “I’m very concerned about living in this neighborhood now.”

David Herz, a resident at the nearby Cedar Creek Club apartments, said the shooting concerns him enough that he plans to return to Los Angeles after moving here four months ago.

“It’s just too much crime and drama in a small town,” he said. “At least it’s understandable in a big city.”

Police have not yet released the name of the man arrested, but they said his injuries were not life-threatening. He was treated at a hospital and released.
