Local road crews get short holiday break

Snow on Christmas is a beloved holiday theme, but it means an interrupted holiday for area road crews.

Dozens of crews in El Paso, Pueblo and Teller counties began working late Monday evening as the first snow fell from the latest storm. Those crews expected to continue working overnight and through Christmas Day on Tuesday.

However, counties took steps to get workers home as soon as possible. The Colorado Springs Street division sent its workers home early at 3 p.m. Monday, but began calling them back in around 7 p.m.

An El Paso County supervisor said crews would try to finish snow removal in a single 12-hour shift beginning at 1 a.m. Tuesday, to get workers home by early afternoon.

Colorado Springs had 45 trucks available for use. El Paso County had 35; Teller County, 18; CDOT, 35; and Pueblo 8. Information from Pueblo County was unavailable Monday night.
