Water main break causes sinkhole, flooding in Colo. Springs

Colorado Springs Utilities crews responded to a water main break early Thursday morning on Fascination Circle.

That’s off of S. Carefree Blvd. near Penrose Elementary School.

Fascination Circle is closed but S. Carefree from Enchanted Circle to Oro Blanco reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Pressure from the water main break caused a sinkhole and sewer backup in 8 homes; 23 homes are without water.

Crews are working on the break and expect to finish by late Thursday afternoon.

Colorado Springs Utilities said homeowners should call their insurance companies.

Utilities crews said they do their best to replace older pipes before there are problems. However, they said there are too many pipes in the city to replace all at once.

Pipes in this neighborhood were installed in the 1960s. Utilities crews said because of the freeze-thaw cycle this time of year, older pipes can be prone to breaks.
