Historic building being restored for veterans

An old historic building in Pueblo could someday be home to disabled veterans. It’s an effort that’s been in the making for several months.

The building is on 4 th and Main Street and would be transformed into a place veterans could go to get everything they need to help them get accustomed to life after service.

“I think it is a worthwhile project. [Otherwise] I wouldn’t have gotten on board,” said Dixie Speltz.

Speltz is passionate about restoring the 86-year-old building.

“I was married to two veterans, and I had three uncles in World War II. My daughter is in the service,” said Speltz.

That’s why she jumped at the opportunity to help turn the building into an assistance center for veterans.

The center would have everything veterans need to help them adjust to life after coming home from war.

“I went to this theater when I was a kid, and that was a long time ago. It’s just important,” said Speltz.

The plans include restoring the theater for the community, but all the work isn’t cheap.

It’s estimated to cost around $7 million. Organizers have established an initiative called One Buck At A Time to help raise money.

“These boys are going oversees; putting their lives on the line. Why wouldn’t they be worth it?” said Speltz.

The man overseeing the project lives in Denver and takes trips to Pueblo to check the progress.
