Community gathers to remember 71st anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor

Community members gathered on Friday to remember and honor those who had fallen during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 71 years ago. Around 50 people attended the service held in Memorial Park.

Pearl Harbor survivors and WWII veterans from the Colorado Springs area were recognized during the ceremony.

Jim Downing, 88, was the only Pearl Harbor survivor present at the ceremony. He was stationed on the USS West Virginia during the time of the attack. He said he still vividly remembers the fear and terror of that day.

He said he hopes people continue honoring the anniversary of Pearl Harbor for years to come so that it’s never forgotten.
