Car lands atop parked car in Colorado Springs crash Tuesday
A Tuesday evening crash at Garden of the Gods Road and Mark Dabling Boulevard involved three vehicles and added to the normal rush hour congestion.
According to Colorado Springs police, a Jeep heading west on Garden of the Gods around 4 p.m. was turning left onto Mark Dabling when it collided with a Saturn sedan that was eastbound on Garden of the Gods.
The Saturn driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, police said. The car traveled 300 feet, jumped a curb, turned while airborne and landed atop a car parked at a carpet store.
Police said the driver of the Saturn is a woman who suffered a broken leg and was treated at a hospital. A witness said a passenger in that car was the driver’s brother. He and the Jeep driver weren’t hurt, police said.
Alcohol and drugs are not factors in the crash, police said. However, speed still is being investigated as a possible factor, as some witnesses said the Saturn driver appeared to be speeding. Police said the traffic signal was changing from yellow to red at the time. Officers cited the Jeep driver for making an improper left turn.
The area was closed off for nearly two hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Lanes of Garden of the Gods and Mark Dabling reopened just after 5:30 p.m.
