Overnight standoff ends in Monument

A standoff ended peacefully in Monument early Monday morning.

Monument Police tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that a man was seen breaking into cars in the Walmart parking lot on Jackson Creek Parkway around 11:40 p.m. Sunday.

Police said when the suspect was approached, he ran away carrying a M-4 style rifle.

The man, identified as 29-year-old Gregory Brunton of Gleneagle, barricaded himself in the loading docks of the nearby Kohl’s department store. Brunton did not make entry into the Kohl’s store according to police.

Brunton continued to ignore orders by officers to drop his weapon and surrender. After one hour of communication on a telephone, negotiators were able to convince Brunton to surrender.

Brunton was taken into custody without incident or injury. He was booked into the Criminal Justice Center under charges of First Degree Criminal Trespass, Felony Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Financial Device, Prohibited Use of Weapons, Theft and Obstruction.

The Monument Police Department was assisted by the Palmer Lake Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol.
