Michigan teacher suspended for playing pro-gay song in class

A Michigan performing arts teacher was suspended for playing a song about being gay to students.

Susan Johnson, teacher at South Lyon middle school, played the song “Same Love” by Seattle-based hip-hop artist, Macklemore.

The song talks about bullying and growing up gay.

She said an eighth grade student suggested the song. Johnson played the song when she found out there were no curse words in it.

She said she played the song to teach her students about diversity.

Another student was offended, and reportedly told the principal.

Johnson was suspended for three days without pay.

She is now back at the school.

The American Civil Liberties Union will file a Freedom of Information Act request to see if any of Johnson’s rights were violated.
