Local contractor helps disabled woman

A local contractor has stepped forward to help a disabled woman fix her home.

Steve Caldwell, owner of Stonegate Homes in Colorado Springs, saw Dorothea Briers’ story on KRDO Newschannel 13 Tuesday night and wanted to help.

“I’d like to think if I was in the same situation someone would help me,” said Caldwell.

Briers’ home is falling apart on the outside and inside. There are holes in her roof, walls and side paneling outside. Flooding in the basement has caused significant damage to the floors and walls. There’s even mold growing in some areas.

Briers also needs a wheelchair ramp and stair railings.

“We would like two chair lifts because it’s a bi-level home with split stairs,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell said the house looks worse than it is and that he can make it look new again.

He is looking for people who want to help, for the right reasons, and he will be spending the next week putting crews together to take on the project.

Briers’ friend, Yolanda Solorzano, has set up a donation fund at ENT Federal Credit Union, in care of “Dorothea Briers,” for anyone who wants to help.

Solorzano and her sisters, Jacqueline Harris and Angitnita Hilton, have been taking care of Dorothea and can answer any questions the public may have.
