Durango weighs outdoor smoking ban in public spots

The Durango City Council is set to consider a smoking ban in public outdoor spaces including bus stops, playgrounds and the Animas River Trail.

The Durango Herald reports (http://bit.ly/SW4aXp ) the City Council is scheduled to adopt the ordinance Nov. 20. The law could go into effect as soon as Dec. 5.

Smokers would be fined up to $300 for multiple offenses. Proceeds would go to anti-tobacco and smoking-cessation efforts.

The proposed ban wouldn’t apply to Hillcrest Golf Course or outdoor religious ceremonies performed by Native Americans.

The proposal originally would have extended the ban to restaurant and bar patios, but that idea was dropped after smokers and business owners protested.
