2 Pueblo schools have federal funds restored

Three low-performing schools that were in danger of having their federal grants yanked will receive the funds after all.

The Colorado Department of Education had said an elementary school in Denver and four middle schools in Pueblo hadn’t improved enough to get the third year of funding from a three-year federal grant that was designed to boost their performance.

Their school districts appealed and tried to show their work to improve.

The Denver Post reports the state said Friday that Gilpin Montessori Public School in Denver and Pitts and Risley middle schools in Pueblo will have grants restored. Freed and Roncalli middle schools in Pueblo, will not.

For Gilpin, the decision restores $420,000 in funding to the elementary school, according to Antwan Wilson, a Denver Public Schools assistant superintendent.
