Cowboy campaigns to legalize cannabis

A proponent of Amendment 64, legalizing marijuana, is taking an unusual approach to sway voters.

Howard Wooldridge was stumping on horseback at the intersection of Powers and Constitution in Colorado Springs.

The “Cannabis Cowboy” is a retired police detective who believes law enforcement officers should devote their time to catching bad guys instead of wasting their time enforcing laws for an illegal green plant.

“One lady said I’d vote for your horse,” Wooldridge said.

Bob Wiley, a retired USAF and Continental Airlines pilot, is his campaign partner.

Wiley said he has been working on drug police reform for the past two decades.

“There’s a lot of people driving by, honking their horns and waving their show of support,” said Wiley.

While there is no doubt people are watching, it’s hard to say if their unusual approach is working.

The duo is on a two-week campaign across Colorado. They’ve already made stops in Ft. Collins, Sterling and Manitou Springs.

They plan to campaign in Pueblo on Monday.

The marijuana-legalization question is one of only three questions up for a public vote statewide, and the other two have attracted little interest.
