Aurora man convicted of killing 2-year-old boy

A 32-year-old Aurora man has been convicted in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

The Aurora Sentinel reports a jury found Ted Madrid guilty Friday of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death. The verdict means a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

Police say Madrid told them he was babysitting Caden Rodgers in January 2011 and tried to throw the boy onto a bed while roughhousing. But the boy missed the bed and was knocked unconscious when he hit his head. He died at a hospital.

Madrid’s attorney said the death was an accident and called for a lesser charge, but prosecutors disagreed. They noted that 911 was not called until 90 minutes after the boy hit his head.
