Memorial held for slain Colorado prison worker

A public memorial for a Colorado prison worker killed in an assault involving an inmate has drawn officers from as far as New York.

The memorial for Sgt. Mary K. Ricard was held Monday in Ordway near the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility. She was killed in an assault at the facility Sept 24 while breakfast was being prepared.

Sgt. Lori Gann was seriously injured in the incident.

Miguel Alonso Contreras-Perez, who was serving 35 years to life for kidnapping and sexual assault, has been named a person of interest in the attack.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 was there as Ricard’s colleagues, family and others packed a high school gymnasium to remember her Monday. Gov. John Hickenlooper also attended.
