Pueblo Police search for man who stole rifle

D-60 officials have lifted a secure perimeter status at Morton Elementary School and Centennial High School. Police activity prompted the security measure for about an hour and a half on Thursday afternoon.

Police say that just before 2 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 2000 block of West 31st Street on the report of theft from a vehicle. The victim told police he had just arrived home when he heard glass breaking outside. The homeowner went outside and saw a man reaching into his broken car window and stealing a high-powered hunting rifle. The suspect then drove away in a green Honda Accord.

A witness reported seeing the same Honda speeding away and running a stop sign. The witness said the man abandoned his vehicle on Morris Street between 30th Street and 31st Street and ran west into a trailer park while carrying the rifle.

Police searched the area but did not find him.

The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic man, about 6 feet tall and thin. He was wearing a white tee shirt, baggy jeans, a dark-colored baseball cap, and sunglasses.

D-60 lifted the secure perimeter status around 3:30 p.m. after police searched the area surrounding the schools and did not find the suspect.

The suspect remains at large and police are asking anyone with information to call police at 719-553-2502 or Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP.
