Search continues in Walsenburg for escaped inmate

Walsenburg schools were locked down on Wednesday afternoon while officials searched for an inmate who escaped from Costilla County Jail.

Robel Turcios-Rodriguez escaped from the jail on Sept. 9. Someone reported to police that they spotted Turcios-Rodriguez in the Walsenburg area around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Huerfano County Sheriff’s dispatch told us the suspect was seen near the golf course in Walsenburg.

The schools released students at normal time to parents only. No buses ran after school.

Several police agencies are currently searching for Turcios-Rodriguez. Reverse emergency notifications were sent to residents in the area, advising them to stay inside and lock their doors.

On Monday, someone reported seeing Turcios-Rodriguez near Fort Garland.

Turcios-Rodriguez was being held on suspicion of human smuggling and resisting arrest when he got away.
