Local veteran gets special home makeover

An army of volunteers spent their Wednesday improving a veteran’s home.

Army Cpl. Jayson Stewart was medically discharged in August after serving eight years. The soldier was injured in multiple IED attacks while in Iraq.

Through the Home Depot Foundation and Rebuilding Together, dozens of volunteers came out to give his back yard a facelift, replace his roof and do numerous safety improvements inside.

“It’s overwhelming … I just appreciate the community, everything they do,” said Stewart.

Stewart said his son Jacob can hardly wait to play in the new back yard. “He has been talking about it non-stop,” he said.

The Army veteran said his injuries hinder his ability to do a lot of house and yard work and it’s too expensive to hire help. He applied for assistance to fix his roof and ended up with this entire makeover.

The effort is part of Celebration of Service, The Home Depot Foundation’s two-month initiative to do more for U.S. military veterans.

They will complete hundreds of service projects across the country up until Veteran’s Day.
