2 cadets charged with sexual misconduct

Two cadets have been charged with sexual misconduct, according to Air Force Academy officials.

A Second Class Cadet (Junior) had two charges preferred against him on Tuesday. The first charge is for attempted sodomy. The second charge has three specifications of violating Article 120, one for aggravated sexual assault and two for aggravated sexual contact.

Another Second Class Cadet had three charges preferred against him on Tuesday. The cadet is charged with attempted sodomy, aggravated sexual contact, and sodomy.

Air Force Academy officials say that at this time charges are only accusations. An Article 32 hearing will be scheduled for each case, likely in October or November.

An Article 32 hearing is the military equivalent to a civilian grand jury proceeding. An investigating officer presides over an Article 32 hearing and submits his or her report of the proceedings with recommendations to the Cadet Wing Commandant as Special Court-Martial Convening Authority. The Commandant will then decide whether to dismiss the case, recommend it go to a General Court-Martial, or dispose of the case through some other disciplinary or administrative action.
