Waldo Canyon Fire cause confirmed

Officials investigating the cause of the Waldo Canyon Fire confirmed on the record that the fire was caused by a human.

This information has been widely known prior to Wednesday’s news conference and had been discussed by officials involved in the investigation but not openly and in an “on the record” setting.

At a news conference on Wednesday the lead investigator, Lt. Adrian Vasquez of the Colorado Springs Police Department, confirmed the Waldo Canyon Fire was “human caused” but could not say whether it was started intentionally or by accident.

Vasquez did deliver one piece of new information regarding the point of origin. The fire started 3 miles off the Waldo Canyon trail, Vasquez said.

Vasquez says investigators are still looking for tips from anyone who may know anything about the possible start of the fire. Even if you are not sure about whether something you saw or have heard regarding the fire you are asked to call Colorado Springs Police at 444-7000.

Fourth Judicial District, District Attorney Dan May could not say what, if any criminal charges the person responsible could face, because it is not yet known whether the fire was intentional or accidental and the circumstances surrounding the start of the fire.
