Mitch Johnson Named NFL High School Coach of the Week

The Denver Broncos have named Fountain Fort Carson’s Mitch Johnson NFL High School Coach of the Week.

Friday night, Johnson led the Class 5A Trojans of the Pioneer League to a 35-21 victory over Columbine, the defending 5A champion, in a first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Trojan’s victory ended a 15-game Columbine winning streak.

“It was worth the price of the ticket,” Johnson said. “It was a real rock-‘em, sock-‘em game. Not one for meek running backs. A real punisher.”

Johnson, 56, is a native of Monterey, Calif. He graduated from Fountain-Fort Carson High School in 1974 and from Southern Colorado State (now CSU Pueblo) in 1978 with a degree in physical education. While at Southern Colorado State, he was an all-conference kicker. After graduating, he signed and had tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos. He then pursued a career in teaching and retired in 2008.

The Denver Broncos will recognize 10 High School Coach of the Week honorees during the regular season. Each weekly winner will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to be used in the school’s football program. Additionally, during the Broncos’ home game on December 30th , the NFL/Denver Broncos High School Coach of the Year will be named and presented with a $2,000 donation to the school’s football program.
