Lion recovering from gunshot wound

A lion at Serenity Springs Wildlife Center is recovering from a gunshot wound. Keepers believe Zazu was shot a couple of weeks ago.

The lion, 17, was hit by a bullet in one of his front legs. “The (Veterinarian) said she thought it was a bullet would. Then another vet said the same thing and he has seen a few in horses,” said executive director Nic Sculac.

Nic said they noticed the wound when the lion was spotted limping. Vets have treated Zazu with antibiotics and are following up on Monday.

The lion’s leg is still swollen and he is unable to walk on it.

Sculac said nearby homeowners with horses have also reported their animals being shot. He said at least one of the animals has died.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Sculac said authorities haven’t found a shell casing.

Sculac said he has no doubt that the crimes are connected even though the sheriff’s office is still investigating.

“There’s no reason to shoot one of these guys. They are caged. If you want to be a hunter, be a hunter,” said Sculac.

In the meantime, Sculac has put up security cameras around the sanctuary.

The sanctuary has had Zazu since he was about 5 months old. He shares a cage with his brother.

If you have any information you are asked to call the sheriff’s office.
