Investigation continues on body found in car on Pikes Peak

Witnesses watched helplessly as a car with at least one person inside burst into flames on Pikes Peak Highway Sunday night.

Colorado Springs Police are continuing the investigation on Monday, but say that identifying the body inside will be difficult. Police say they believe there was only one person in the vehicle, but they are not sure if that person is male or female.

The vehicle is believed to be a four-door passenger car, possibly a Subaru with a black roof, police said.

The staff at the Pikes Peak toll booth did not allow a KRDO NewsChannel 13 crew in to get video or talk to police Sunday night, but a witness coming down from the peak said the burnt car was near the top of the mountain and appeared to have been in an accident.

If anyone has information about a family member who did not return home Sunday night and who may have been near the Summit House or on Pikes Peak Highway, please call Springs police at 719-444-7000.

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
