Canon City man arrested, accused in stabbing

Canon City police have arrested a man who’s accused of stabbing someone in the 600 block of Main Street on Saturday night.

Officers responded to a reported assault just before 11 p.m. and found a 22-year-old Canon City man bleeding from the chest and leg from apparent stab wounds. The suspect in the stabbing had already fled the scene.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect as 22-year-old Matthew James Hansen. An arrest warrant was obtained for Hansen and he was arrested by the Greeley Police Department on Monday. He will be returned to Canon City to face charges of first degree assault.

Police say the incident began as an argument between Hansen and a woman. The victim was accompanying the woman through the alley on Main Street from a local bar because he didn’t want her “to go out there alone,” police said. Words were exchanged between the two men that resulted in the victim being stabbed.

The victim’s injuries are listed as serious. Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call the Canon City Police Department at 719-276-5600 or Crime Stoppers at 719-275-STOP (7867).
