Attempted child abduction in Security

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted child abduction that happened Monday morning in Security.

Deputies are investigating the incident that happened near Caballero Avenue and Grand Peak Rd in Security-Widefield around 6:40 AM, said El Paso County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Kramer.

An man claiming to be armed tried to get a 12-year old boy into his car but the boy was able to run away, Kramer told KRDO NewsChannel 13.

“It sounds like there was some physical contact. This male suspect grabbed a hold of the arm of the young boy. The young boy was able to break free and again run away and get back to safety and make the report,” said Kramer.

The suspect was driving a faded red, two-door Pontiac, Kramer said. According to the report, the model may be a late 90s or early 2000s and the number of the license plate may include a “6.”

The suspect is described as a white man, about 6-feet tall with a heavy build and a pot belly, said Kramer. The suspect is bald on top with a ring of grey hair around his head and was wearing a brown and plaid short-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.

“We are taking steps now to try to do some checks with the Department of Revenue and Motor Vehicle Records for Pontiacs with at least the number ‘6’ in the license plate to see if anything comes up that may then further match to the physical description of the suspect,” said Kramer.

According to Kramer, parents should be talking with their kids about “stranger danger.” He said kids should never walk alone, they should choose well lit paths and ensure their parents know that path well. He also said kids should remember three key things if they are every approached: say no, get away and tell someone.
