Deer Rescued From Family Swimming Pool

A Colorado family wakes up Sunday morning to find a deer in their backyard swimming pool.

“My dogs were barking like crazy and I couldn’t get them to knock it off,” said homeowner Scott Smith.

Smith said he peered out his window and noticed the water in his swimming pool was a little low. Then he noticed the deer floating on his pool cover.

The deer wasn’t just hanging out. Smith said he was struggling to get out of the pool and had to keep swimming to stay above the water.

“First I called family members and said I’ve got a deer in my pool,” he said. Then Scott said he called 9-1-1. Springs Police Officer Olav Chaney responded to the unusual call.

Unable to get the deer out themselves, they requested the help of firefighters.

Scott said a heavy rescue crew from station 17 sprung into action. They were able to create a ramp to lure the deer out.

But it didn’t work right away. Instead of climbing out, the deer sat on the ramp.

For about ten minutes, the patient homeowners and firefighters attempted to coax the deer out. Finally, a little nudge from a rope did the trick.

“There you go buddy, woohoo,” said a witness.

The buck ran away quickly.

Smith said the pool was damaged and his pool cover was torn. He estimated the damages at about $2,500.
