Blind woman attacked by two men in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police are looking for two men accused of attacking a woman who is legally blind.

Tammy Reynolds, 44, was out for a walk in the Stonecrest area on the city’s east side using her white cane Thursday evening, when the men approached her and asked if she had money.

“I said I didn’t have any,” said Reynolds. “They shoved me down and started kicking me, and they ran off laughing.”

Reynolds said she used her cellphone to call 911. She was treated for minor injuries at Memorial Hospital and released. She is a diabetic who’s blind in one eye and partially blind in the other.

The attackers were unfamiliar, said Reynolds, but they got close enough that she described them as white men in their late teens or early 20s, of medium build with dark hair.

“Did they do it because I’m blind”? Reynolds asked. “Or would they just go out and do it to anybody?”

Police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said the two men face enhanced penalties, if arrested, for attacking a disabled person.

“It sounds like if they’re willing to do this to someone, they’ve probably done it in the past and they’ll do it again,” said Miller. “So sooner or later, hopefully, we’ll catch them.”

One neighbor said she plans to move out of the neighborhood because of past trouble there that included graffiti, and vehicle and home burglaries possibly committed by a transient.

However, after KRDO NewsChannel 13 aired the report, two neighbors called to say the attack was an isolated incident and not indicative of how the neighborhood usually is.

Still, some residents say they have installed security lights for safety, and will ask their homeowners’ association to install street lights.
