Tattoo Ink Linked To Skin Infections

The Centers for Disease Control confirms tattoo ink is linked to skin infections in four states, including Colorado.

In New York, where the majority of the infections were found, authorities believe bacteria got inside the ink during manufacturing or later when the tattoo artist diluted the ink with non-sterile water.

Pens and Needles Custom Tattoo Company in Colorado Springs emphasizes their safety practices, which include the purchase of tattoo inks.

“Those (reputable) companies only accept your purchases if you have an official tattoo license,” said artist Austin Romesburg.

Romesburg said the inks they purchase all come labeled, numbered and have expiration dates. He said they never dilute ink or wash skin with tap water.

The FDA says symptoms of the skin infection include a rash and bumps. It may also be itchy or painful at the tattoo site.

In all, four different brands of black and grey ink were identified as contaminated according to the CDC.

The bacteria infection is called Mycobacterium chelonae and experts say it can take as many as six months to treat infections.
