Springs family says roofing company ‘Saved Their Lives’ from carbon monoxide poisoning

A Colorado Springs family is thankful for the vigilance of their roofing company, which identified a deteriorated and rusty pipe on their roof.

Joanna Terry called Peak Roofing Team to repair her roof, damaged during a recent hail storm.

Terry said she received a courtesy call that said, while repairing the roof, the job foreman had noticed a deteriorated pipe believed to be the hot water heater ventilation pipe,

“The carbon monoxide was coming through that and once we closed up the house for the winter all the carbon monoxide would have built up in our home, and I’ll leave it to your imagination what would have happened,” said Terry.

Terry said she has contacted a plumber to make the repairs, and said she in very thankful for the actions taken by Peak Roofing Team.

“Kudos to Peak Roofing Team for actually stepping up, and they didn’t make any money off this by telling us that. It was a courtesy thing and they saved our lives,” said Terry.

Terry said she had roofers from another company making repairs on her home just 18 months earlier. Terry said this damage would have been visible at that time, but that company did not notify her of the damaged pipe.

KRDO Newschannel 13 talked with the foreman who was responsible for notifying Terry about the danger, and he said that he is not a hero, but was “just doing my job.”

According to Peak Roofing Team, it is not uncommon to run across rusted pipes in older homes.

Arrow Plumbing, the company Terry hired to fix the pipe, said it is important for homeowners to inspect the pipes in their homes, attics and on their roofs. If anything looks unusual, a plumber should be contacted right away.

“Take that extra minute. Look at the ventilation pipes that are coming off your roof. Take a look at it, it’s worth it for your family,” said Terry.
