Flood Control System Installed In Ute Pass Area

Homes and even a playground were damaged after flash flooding and mud slides in the Ute Pass area, and now El Paso County has erected a temporary flooding control system, for when heavy rains come to the area again.

El Paso County commissioners approved the use of emergency funds to build the temporary remedy, in conjunction with school district 14.

County Commissioner Sallie Clark, who represents the Ute Pass area, said that the system uses Trap Bags, and will help divert water more directly into Fountain Creek.

Some homeowners said they were happy the county was taking some steps, but others KRDO NewsChannel13 talked to, said they were concerned. This because they live in front of the creek and said they feel the Trap Bags will funnel the water and debris directly to their homes.

County officials said they want to remind the public that the Trap Bags are a temporary fix, and that the Ute Pass are will eventually need a permanent bridge and water diversion.

The temporary flood control system cost some $20,000 in tax payer money, but the permanent solution will be far more expensive, and run into the millions.
