Colorado Springs’ fallen hero

Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Darrel L. Enos, 36, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was killed in Afghanistan on Friday.

Enos died while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to 3d Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, based out of Camp Lejeune.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Enos, a 16-year veteran of the Navy, joined MARSOC in December 2007 and initially came into the Navy in June 1995 as a Hospital Corpsman. He was also trained as an Aviation Medical Technician, attending school in Pensacola, Fla., in 1996. He served with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW)-112, and also Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron (VMU)-2, deploying with that unit to Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was then assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26 and completed two additional tours to Iraq. In June 2006, HM1 Enos attended Independent Duty Corpsman School, San Diego, and then reported to MARSOC, first with the Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, then to 2d MSOB and finally 3d MSOB, completing three deployments with MARSOC.

Enos deployed in support of both Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. His personal decorations include the Purple Heart, Air Medal with two Strike Flights, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, three Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and four Navy Good Conduct Medals.
