Woman Escapes Mobile Home Fire

A home was destroyed by a fire at a mobile home Thursday morning in the 3400 block of Lone Feather Drive in El Paso County.

An 86-year-old woman named Evelyn lived alone at the home, according to her daughter.

Linda Spencer said her mother was home alone when the fire sparked and was able escape out of a bathroom window.

Spencer said the home was where she grew up and graduated from high school.

She was devastated to watch it burn to the ground. Spencer and fellow neighbors voiced frustration over how long it took crews to respond and then put the fire out.

Chief Nellie Roop with the Ellicott Fire Protection District said it took firefighters 26 minutes to respond to the fire after the initial call.

She said crews responded as quickly as possible, but that the drive time was long.

Firefighters also struggled to find water, Roop said.

Electricity was shut off to the mobile home, so the well was not working.

The nearest hydrant was at Schreiver Air Force Base and fire crews had to drive back and forth to get water. Each trip took about 20 minutes.

Officials said no one was hurt in this fire. Fire investigators have not said what caused the fire.

Evelyn speculated that the fire sparked due to a wiring problem in the kitchen.
