CSPD looks for shooting suspect
Colorado Springs police are looking for a man accused of shooting another man in the 1900 block of Del Mar Drive on Monday morning.
Police have identified their suspect as Roy Locklear, 23. An arrest warrant has been issued for Locklear on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder. A background check on Locklear done by KRDO NewsChannel 13 found no prior criminal record in Colorado.
The shooting victim remains hospitalized in critical/stable condition and is expected to recover. His identity has not been released.
The shooting happened in the Pikes Peak Park area of the city, a neighborhood particularly plagued by violent crime in recent years. KRDO NewsChannel 13 reviewed news reports in the area and found that the shooting was its tenth violent incident since the summer of 2008.
KRDO’s research found cases of two murders, two attempted murders, shots fired into two houses, a vehicle and a parking lot, a stabbing and a domestic dispute in which a man allegedly strangled his ex-wife until she passed out.
Dave Corbit, a neighbor who lives in front of where the victim was found, has been in the neighborhood since 2005 and said he finds the violence disturbing.
“I saw the (victim) lying on the ground,” said Corbit. “He had one entry and exit hole, as far as I could tell, and then just another shot. He was saying that he didn’t know if he could hang on. It makes a lot of people wonder whether they want to stay in neighborhoods like this, especially with all the violence, because a bullet could have ricocheted.”
Another neighbor, Daniel McKinney, said he doesn’t think the area should be singled out as being especially violent, because violence happens everywhere nowadays.
“I don’t feel threatened,” said McKinney. “I’ve got wonderful neighbors, and every one of us has been supportive and friendly. So I just feel like I’m protected. I feel safe.”
Neighbors said they take some consolation in that the violence seems to be committed by people from outside the neighborhood.
