Crews repairing sinkhole near Cripple Creek

Officials say State Highway 67 near Cripple Creek southwest of Colorado Springs could reopen soon after a sinkhole opened over a mine shaft under the northbound side of the roadway.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the southbound side of the highway remains stable, and one lane of the highway could reopen Tuesday if workers can get a working, temporary traffic signal to the scene.

CDOT says the highway has been closed in both directions on a four-mile stretch after the hole was reported Saturday morning. The hole is about 5 feet wide under the surface of the roadway. Its depth varies between 20 and 50 feet.

Traffic is being rerouted to county roads.

About 4,000 vehicles use the affected part of the highway daily.
