Standoff in Colorado Springs ends with arrest

A standoff in Colorado Springs with a stabbing suspect on Sunbird Drive has ended.

Police officers tell us 34-year-old Javiar Abeyta stabbed both his parents in their home Wednesday night, before fleeing the scene.

Neighbors notified police when Abeyta returned to the home around 6:45 a.m. Thursday.

“He was obviously home. We could see him in the windows, but he would not answer the phone and would not come to the door,” said Lt. Elden Stromer with Colorado Springs Police Department.

CSPD said Abeyta would not cooperate with police, and was also holding a knife during the standoff.

Police said they deployed several canisters of tear gas, and also used a Taser gun to coax Abeyta out of the home. Abeyta reportedly threw one of the tear gas canisters out of the window of the home during the standoff.

“Finally he threw down the knife he had in his hand, and surrendered,” said Stromer.

According to police, Abeyta’s parents were transported to the hospital with serious injuries, but are expected to recover.

Police said Abeyta suffers from mental illnesses.
