Next step in Waldo Canyon recovery nears

Helicopter drops are scheduled this month to provide much-needed cover on some sections of the Waldo Canyon burn scar.

Fire information officer Rob Dyerberg said on Monday that in two weeks, helicopters will drop grass seed, hay, mulch and wood chips on selected sections of the area burned by the recent wildfire. The material will protect areas that are most likely to promote new growth, he said.

Dyerberg said the possibility remains that heavy rain could wash the added material away, but officials hope it will remain long enough to form a base for future growth and rehabilitation of the burn scar.

“It’s something that over the years will help,” said Dyerberg. “It will help stabilize that area and prevent large floods and mudslides. But it’s going to take some time.”

Dyerberg said officials are being very selective about where to apply the material because it is too expensive to cover the entire burn scar.

Work continues on restoring the Waldo Canyon and Rampart Reservoir trails damaged by the fire, Dyerberg said.

They may not reopen until next spring.

The Blodgett Peak trail also remains closed.
