Fish Dying In Reservoirs

It’s been a pretty dry year. The hot and dry conditions have been less than perfect for our lakes and reservoirs. It’s even worse for the wildlife living in the water.

“The lakes are low, and in a lot of cases, the boat ramps are out of the water now, and in some cases they have gotten so low, a lot of fish are dying.” said Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Michael Seraphin.

The fish at Holbrook Reservoir in Otero County have been wiped out.

“There’s not a lot of sport fish to begin with, but carp and shad fish that were in there have been seen dead and dying along the shoreline,” said Seraphin.

Fish has been slow this season, especially shore side, according to the Colorado Department of Wildlife website.

Anglers with boats are having better luck, but conditions are still not great, said Seraphin.

“We didn’t get the snowpack in the mountains during March. It’s just been so dry for so long and so hot, these reservoirs are going down,” said Seraphin.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife can always salvage sport fish in extreme cases, but as far as getting more water, it’s up to mother nature.
