Apartment fire displaces seven people

An overnight fire in a fourplex displaced seven people early Saturday morning, in the 900 block of Moreno Ave.

Multiple calls reported the fire at 12:08 Saturday morning. Neighbors say it was a chaotic scene.

“We ran around like our heads were cut off like chickens,” Casey Key said.

“Everyone was hollering ‘somebody’s upstairs! Somebody’s upstairs! They may be home upstairs!'” Tony Bell said.

Heavy smoke and flames were visible from a ground-level apartment when crews arrived at the scene. The fourplex was evacuated and firefighters were able to get in and knock down the blaze. But all units in the building were damaged.

“This was their home, the place where they could lay their head, and now it’s gone,” Key said.

Six people were taken the hospital to be checked out, including two police officers who were exposed to the fire. Everyone should be okay.

Later Saturday morning, some residents came back to get some of the things spared in the blaze.

“A lot of them are scared,” Key said. “A lot of them are heartbroken and don’t know what to even say.”

The fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
