Deadly motorcycle crash in Cheyenne Wells

The Colorado State Patrol investigated a motorcycle crash that killed one person and injured two others.

The crash happened on Hwy 385 south of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado around 6:00 p.m. Thursday. The two vehicles involved in the crash were both Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

Both Motorcycles were northbound on Colorado 385 when the first motorcycle slowed down to make a left turn onto County Rd C in Cheyenne County. The motorcycle behind didn’t see the first vehicle slowing down and the two collided.

The driver and passenger of the second motorcycle were ejected. 49-year-old James Petty of Lovington, NM sustained life-threatening injuries and succumbed to his injuries on Friday. His passenger, a 45-year-old woman from Lovington, NM sustained a broken ankle.

The driver of the front motorcycle, a 53-year-old man from Lovington, NM was not injured in the accident. His passenger, a 52-year-old woman also from Lovington sustained a broken ankle.

Petty was not wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash.
