Six-vehicle accident kills two near Westcliffe

There was a deadly accident on CO 69 about two miles south of Westcliffe on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Colorado State Patrol, six vehicles were involved in the crash that killed two people around 1:20 p.m.

State Patrol says a line of five vehicles was stopped in traffic, facing northbound, in an active construction zone. A tractor-trailer combination approached the construction zone and failed to stop for the line of traffic.

The tractor-trailer collided with the rear of the last vehicle in line, ejecting the truck driver, 57-year-old Robert White of Temple, Texas.

The truck traveled off the right side of the road, colliding with a construction worker before rolling on its side. 20-year-old Jeffrey Mosher of Coal Creek was with a local construction crew.

Two other people on scene were airlifted to St. Anthony’s in Denver, and a third victim was taken to Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo.

At this time, alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.

State Patrol tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that at least 25 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the tractor-trailer prompting hazmat crews and CDOT to respond and close the highway. The highway reopened later Tuesday night.
