Missing man thought to have left on his own

Colorado Springs police said the elderly man thought to be missing early Sunday morning probably left on his own.

Wayne Lufkin, 74, is wanted in Oregon for a parole violation on the original charge of murder. He’s also wanted in the Denver metro area on traffic-related charges.

Lufkin had been at the Terrace Gardens Healthcare Center for only two days before he disappeared. He was last seen at 2am. When staff members checked in on him at around 3am, he was gone. Police think he crawled out of a bedroom window.

“He had some cash and had previously had a conversation with some of the staff members asking them about security features. Was anybody watching him? Were their windows secure? Is there security inside the building?” Sargeant Roger Vargason said.

Police say Lufkin was later seen on the 2400 block of Fountain Boulevard at an apartment complex, possibly getting into a white vehicle. They say they’ve filed a missing person’s report with the National Crime Information System, and they’ll report him if they see him.

“We would like to contact him and make sure he’s safe. That’s our first priority,” Sgt. Vargason said. “Second priority, we’ll deal with the warrant. Being 74 years old, we want to make sure he’s not lost.”

Police say there’s no indication that Lufkin is armed or dangerous. He is 6 ft. tall, and weights 185 lbs. He has short white hair and is balding with no facial hair. He was wearing a light blue polo shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes. If you see him, call police at (719) 444-7000.
