Law enforcement to focus on Pueblo Boulevard safety

You can expect more patrols along Pueblo Boulevard very soon from the three agencies who patrol the road. The Pueblo Police Department, the Pueblo Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol said they’ll increase patrols in the name of public safety.

The joint effort was announced Wednesday and expected to cover the next three months.

“It’s been a topic of concern by the public and we’re trying to be responsive to the public concerns,” said Troy Davenport, a deputy chief for the Pueblo Police Department.

Davenport said police get many complaints about the major thoroughfare on the south and west side of Pueblo. Many of those complaints focus on drivers speeding along the road and the many accidents that occur.

“We’ll be looking for be looking for careless driving and reckless driving, things we can pursue as law enforcement in a proactive and preventative way,” said Davenport.

Drivers told about the plan Wednesday said Pueblo Boulevard is a dangerous stretch.

“Too many people are too busy texting or drinking and driving,” said Jacqueline Ortega. “There’s a lot of accidents that happen just because of alcohol.”

Ortega said when she can, she avoids traveling on Pueblo Boulevard.

“I’d rather go on Interstate 25 than Pueblo Boulevard,” said Ortega. “I do like how there are going to be more cops.”

Police said you can expect officers to focus on getting drivers and passengers to buckle their seat belts.
